My First Spanish Test Actually Made Me Proud

My First Spanish Test Actually Made Me Proud

Today I had my first oral test of the school year... and somehow it was in Spanish, which made the whole thing feel way more important to me than a normal test probably should 😭 I was nervous before it started. Not panic nervous, but that annoying kind where you suddenly forget every word you’ve ever learned and start questioning if you can even speak properly in any language. Very useful.
While I was waiting for my turn, I kept repeating little phrases in my head and trying to remember the things I had studied. Then my name came and I had that exact moment of okay... now we find out if my brain decides to cooperate or completely leave the chat.
At the beginning I was a little tense. I could hear myself speaking and thinking at the same time, which is honestly the worst because then you start noticing every tiny mistake. But after the first few answers, something clicked. I relaxed. The words started coming more naturally and I stopped trying to make every sentence perfect.
And then I got a good grade.
I know it’s just one test. I’m not suddenly fluent and I definitely still make stupid mistakes, but I was genuinely proud of myself. Like... properly proud.
Spanish means more to me now than it did before.
It’s not only a subject at school anymore. It’s slowly becoming part of this future I keep imagining. If everything goes the way we’re hoping, it could soon become a language I hear every single day. In shops. At cafés. On the street. At the beach. Maybe with new friends. Maybe during completely normal conversations that I can’t even imagine yet.
That thought is a little crazy.
Right now I still have to think before speaking. I translate things in my head. Sometimes I know exactly what I want to say in English or Italian and then Spanish decides to disappear from my brain for no reason 😂 But today made me feel like I’m moving in the right direction.
There’s something exciting about learning a language when you know it might actually become part of your real life.
It suddenly feels less like homework and more like preparation.
And maybe that’s why this grade made me so happy. It wasn’t just a number. It felt like a tiny sign that the version of my life I keep imagining is getting a little closer.
Of course, I’m still very far from speaking Spanish naturally. I’ll probably embarrass myself a thousand times before that happens. I’ll use the wrong word, pronounce something terribly, maybe accidentally say something completely different from what I mean... iconic.
But I’m actually excited for that too.
Because every mistake will mean I’m using it.
And today, for the first time, Spanish didn’t feel like just another school subject.
It felt like something that might soon become mine. 🇪🇸🤍
Do you remember the first moment when a language you were learning suddenly started to feel real? Tell me in the comments.
