I have been thinking about this for days now. Like, literally days. Lying in bed at night, phone in my hand, just scrolling through photos of streets I already know by heart but somehow never get tired of looking at. The Duomo at golden hour. Via Montenapoleone completely empty early in the morning. That specific shade of grey that the Milan sky gets in certain afternoons that I honestly cannot find anywhere else in the world.
I know it sounds dramatic. My mom already told me I am being dramatic. But if you know me even a little, you know that Milan is not just a trip for me. It never has been.
It is something I need. The way you need to exhale after holding your breath for too long. Every single time I go, something inside me resets. Something that I did not even realize was a little broken until the city fixes it without asking.
People talk about Paris like it is the capital of everything beautiful. And okay, I get it, Paris is Paris. They talk about New York like it is the place where ambition actually lives. But Milan is mine. It is the Italian version of all of that, and it does it with this quiet, almost arrogant confidence that no other city I have ever visited can replicate.
It does not scream luxury. It simply is luxury. And that difference means everything to me.
Via Montenapoleone is a place I think about more than I probably should for a seventeen year old. Just saying the name out loud does something to my chest. Every single window, every facade, every person walking past in something impeccable is a reminder that beauty in that place is not an accident or a trend. It is a discipline. A way of existing that the city has practiced for centuries and never got tired of.
I want to walk slowly this time. Stop and actually look at everything. The way the light hits a leather bag in a window. The stitching on a coat I will never buy but need to observe closely anyway. The silence that somehow manages to exist on those streets even when they are completely full of people. That specific silence is one of my favorite things in the world and I am not even sure I can explain why.
I am not going with a long list of things I want to buy. That is not really the point. I am going to absorb. To study, almost. To pay attention the way I wish I could pay attention to everything in my life but rarely manage to.
Because here is the thing about Milan that so many people miss completely when they talk about it only as a fashion capital. This city has layers. So many layers that even after years of going, I feel like I am still just scratching the surface of what it actually is.
It was a Roman city. The Duomo took nearly six hundred years to complete. I remember learning this as a child and not really understanding what that meant. Now when I stand in front of it I think about all the people who worked on something they knew they would never see finished, and I feel something very complicated and very human inside my chest.
Some cities teach you about fashion. Milan teaches you about taste. And I have learned over time that those two things are really not the same at all.
The thing I think about most when I imagine this trip is the moment I arrive and the city just hits me. That specific smell, that specific energy, that air that feels a little electric and a little expensive and a little like possibility. Every single time it feels like the first time. My heart does this thing and I cannot help smiling even when I am tired and my bag is heavy and I have not slept enough.
That first moment is mine. And I protect it. π€
I am going to document everything, but not in that way where documenting becomes the whole point and you stop actually living the experience. Just honestly. The corners that feel cinematic. The shop window that stops me mid-walk. The outfit I wear when I finally feel brave enough to dress for Milan rather than just for myself, because those are two very different things.
You will see all of it. Promise.
But first, tell me something. Is there a city that does to you what Milan does to me, that specific thing where you arrive and feel immediately more like yourself than you did before you left.
I genuinely want to know. I think the cities we fall in love with say a lot about who we are still in the process of becoming. β¨
